The City of Tonawanda is located in the Northwest corner of Erie County in Western New York. It is located directly along the Niagara River and was the original terminus for the historic Erie Canal. Originally, the area was included as part of the Town of Tonawanda and then in 1904, it incorporated as the City of Tonawanda.
The name was passed down from local aboriginal people and means “swift waters” referencing the mighty Niagara river which provides the border between the US and Canada.
The City of Tonawanda has close historical relationships with the Town of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda. It was a part of each before it’s own incorporation in 1904. North Tonawanda is often referred to as the “Sister City”. Gateway Harbor is a park shared between North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda, including the Canal.
Collectively, the City of Tonawanda, Town of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda are often referred to as “The Tonawandas”.
